Dr. Matthew W. Luedke
Overview
During my neurology and neurophysiology training at Duke, I developed an abiding fondness for my colleagues and patients, so it was an easy decision to stay on as an attending physician. I have the privilege of working with patients in both the hospital and clinic. As a hospital neurologist, my interests are in the diagnosis and treatment of acute neurologic problems, such as seizures, head injuries, infections, and autoimmune conditions. My outpatient practice focuses on the treatment of epilepsy in patients with hard-to-control seizures. In both the hospital and clinic, I have the pleasure of working with the excellent medical students, residents, and fellows of Duke University Hospital, along with nationally and internationally recognized colleagues.

I am a neurologist and cancer doctor who treats brain tumors and researches ways to improve quality of life for brain tumor patients. As a college student, I thought I was going to be a scientist, but fell in love with studying the brain and its inner workings. I enjoy being at Duke, because I work with some of the top clinicians and researchers in the field, and a generous and warm-hearted staff that helps patients and their loved ones through treatment. It is hard to pick one thing I enjoy about my job. I enjoy seeing patients and their loved ones, being at the cutting edge of research and teaching the next generation of doctors. I think it is the chance to do so many different things that makes my job special. Outside of work, I enjoy shopping at farmer’s markets, cooking and exercising. I am currently the chief of the division of Epilepsy, Sleep, and Clinical Neurophysiology. I see epilepsy patients and patients with sleep disorders. The epilepsy patients that I see often have a hard time controlling their seizures or have other epilepsy-related problems. At Duke, we have many options, including clinical trials, advanced medications, and surgical options, that we can offer patients to get them to a better quality of life with fewer or no seizures. In sleep disorders, I see many patients with sleep apnea and have a passion for treating individuals with narcolepsy. My philosophy is that I want patients to be aware of all the different treatment options that they have available this them. Together, we come up with what I, the patient, and the family think is the best approach for the individual. This way, we can individualize the treatment for each person. It is very gratifying for me to see patients doing so much better with the appropriate medications and pursuing the dreams they have and doing the things they really want to do.
