What is the definition of Hypomelanotic Disorder?
Hypomelanotic disorder is a term that refers to types of skin conditions in which melanocytes (pigment cells) have a loss of pigment. Types of hypomelanotic disorders include vitiligo, ash leaf spots, and idiopathic guttate hypomelanosis, among others.
What are the symptoms of Hypomelanotic Disorder?
Symptoms of hypomelanotic disorders include loss of pigmentation that varies by the type of disorder. Symptoms of vitiligo include a complete loss of pigment in the skin that appears as well-delineated spots and patches. Symptoms of ash leaf spots include oval flattened areas of skin that lack pigment and angiofibromas on the face. Symptoms of idiopathic guttate hypomelanosis include small white flattened areas on sun-exposed skin areas.

What are the current treatments for Hypomelanotic Disorder?
Treatment for hypomelanotic disorders depends on the type. Treatment for vitiligo may include corticosteroids, tacrolimus, pimecrolimus, ultraviolet B and PUVA therapy, self-tanning creams, and skin grafting. Treatment for ash leaf spots may include laser therapy. Treatment for idiopathis guttate hypomelanosis is not necessary.
