Learn About Infant Epilepsy with Migrant Focal Crisis

What is the definition of Infant Epilepsy with Migrant Focal Crisis?
Infant epilepsy with migrant focal crisis is a very rare inherited (genetic) disorder characterized by early-onset (first few weeks of life to 6 months of age) seizures with migrating, continuous muscle spasms (myoclonus) and progressive brain damage (encephalopathy).
What are the symptoms of Infant Epilepsy with Migrant Focal Crisis?
Symptoms of infant epilepsy with migrant focal (one side of the brain) crisis include early-onset seizures with migrating, continuous muscle spasms (myoclonus). Later, generalized tonic-clonic (both sides of the brain) seizures appear, along with the development of progressive brain damage (encephalopathy), muscle weakness, and degenerative disease of the nervous system (ataxia). The generalized tonic-clonic seizures progressively increase in frequency and may occur up to 100 times a day. Babies with infant epilepsy with migrant focal crisis achieve very little developmental progress.
