Learn About Lambdoid Synostosis
What is the definition of Lambdoid Synostosis?
Lambdoid synostosis, also known as posterior plagiocephaly, is a very rare form of craniosynostosis, which is a birth defect wherein one or more of the cranial sutures (joints) close too early before the brain is fully formed. Lambdoid synostosis involves the lambdoid suture that runs along the back of the head. As the brain continues to grow, the skull appears misshapen.
What are the symptoms of Lambdoid Synostosis?
Symptoms of lambdoid synostosis may include a misshapen head that appears flat; a trapezoid shaped-head; tilting of the head to one side; one ear higher than the other; a raised, hard ridge along the lambdoid suture; a bulge in the mastoid region (in front of ear); and slow or no head growth.

What are the current treatments for Lambdoid Synostosis?
Mild cases of lambdoid synostosis may not need any treatment, as the defect may correct as the child grows. A specially molded helmet may be the only treatment needed if the lambdoid suture is still open.
However, most babies with lambdoid synostosis are treated with corrective surgery (endoscopic or open) to allow the brain room to grow normally. A specially molded helmet may be required after surgery.
