Learn About Laryngocele

What is the definition of Laryngocele?
Laryngoceles are rare congenital (present at birth) abnormalities of the supraglottic larynx (voice box) characterized by the formation of an air or fluid-filled cyst and dilation of the laryngeal ventricle. There are three types of laryngoceles: 1) internal, 2) external, and 3) mixed (both internal and external). Rarely, laryngoceles may also be acquired in individuals who are glassblowers or those with chronic obstructive airway disease.
What are the symptoms of Laryngocele?
Small laryngoceles may not have any symptoms. Symptoms of laryngoceles may include a mass on the side of the neck that increases with external pressure, cough, sore throat, hoarseness, difficulty swallowing, high-pitched wheezing (stridor), airway obstruction, fever, pain, and infection. Individuals with laryngoceles have an increased risk of laryngeal cancer.
