I take care of women from adolescence through their adult lives. I went into OB-GYN because I had an interest in women’s health, and I felt like the specialty gave me the opportunity to have a longitudinal relationship with women. I was a graduate student working on a combined MD and PhD in neuroscience research when my twin boys arrived prematurely and needed the services of the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). This experience in the NICU environment inspired me to continue my work in neuroscience and specialize in neonatology. As a neonatologist, I care for newborn infants who require intensive care for different reasons, including being born prematurely, with heart defects or brain injuries. Providing treatment for critically ill infants, and helping to bring them to a place of stability and health, is truly gratifying. In addition to the clinical care I provide, I am involved in research regarding how to both mitigate and treat brain injuries which occur in infants due to premature birth. I decided at a very young age that I wanted to become an obstetrician. I was 7 when I watched my own mother go through pregnancy and became fascinated with pregnancy and birth. I started telling everyone “I’m going to deliver babies when I grow up.” As I went through medical school, my draw to the specialty confirmed what I'd felt from a very young age. One of the many reasons I love working at Duke is we are always well-equipped to deal with any emergencies which can arise unexpectedly. While most deliveries do not require any interventions, I am happy we can offer anything needed on a moment’s notice. Growing up, I always had an interest in science. Early on, I actually considered becoming a veterinarian because I love animals. However, after having more experience in the veterinary field as well as in medicine, I was drawn to taking care of people. As a child, I had a heart condition and spent a lot of time in and out of doctors offices and hospitals. So I was inspired at an early age toward a career in medicine. I see a wide variety of patients, from pregnancy care to the delivery process, annual visits, or patients who need gynecology surgery. I try to be very instructional and give patients as much information as I can about the problem that they are here for and the options for treatments. I work with our residency program in our family planning clinic where I am the director, and I am also associate residency director. After undergraduate school, I joined the Peace Corps and went to Ecuador, then came back to the area for medical school. My husband and I have a two year old son who takes up the bulk or our time and consumes a lot of our energy.
