I have chosen to direct my efforts as a physician toward improving the quality of life for women who are dealing with pelvic floor disorders. I focus on listening to a patient's description of her symptoms and their impact on her, her goals for treatment, and – by using evidence-based techniques– I evaluate her condition. Treatment options might vary from patient to patient; the best way to proceed is often an individualized decision. I am pleased to have been a member of the Duke faculty since 1996. Our division is nationally recognized as offering the best possible urogynecologic care with a full range of approaches to suit any patient. Dr. Weidner is highly rated in 4 conditions, according to our data. I decided to pursue a career in obstetrics after observing a delivery during my first week of obstetrics training in medical school. The sheer excitement of every birth along with the knowledge of all of the possible complications faced by a mother was what attracted me to the field of maternal fetal medicine. Every day I feel privileged to be a part of this very personal experience for so many women. As a researcher in the areas of infectious diseases in pregnancy, I see it as my duty to help advance the care of women and their fetuses who may experience infectious complications. I hope to leave a mark on our field that leads to improved infectious disease outcomes for women and their children. I moved to the Chapel Hill area after many years of living and practicing in Rhode Island because of the outstanding group of physicians here. My family loves the area and getting out to explore all that North Carolina has to offer. Dr. Hughes is highly rated in 9 conditions, according to our data. I became interested in pelvic floor disorders because of the emphasis on improving the quality of life. For most pelvic floor disorders – bladder, bowel, sexual dysfunction, or vaginal bulge – there are usually multiple treatment options with different pros and cons. Because each woman is different, I tend to teach each patient about her own pelvic floor issues, and then we collaborate to develop a treatment plan that incorporates her specific goals. I am actively involved in research because I think that is the way that we will develop better treatment options for women. In my spare time, I love to cook, entertain friends, and travel with my husband and children. Dr. Siddiqui is highly rated in 6 conditions, according to our data. Her top areas of expertise are Urinary Incontinence, Uterine Prolapse, Stress Urinary Incontinence, Hysterectomy, and Oophorectomy.

"I can distinctly remember the awe and utter amazement I felt watching my first cesarean delivery. I knew that there was a baby inside the mother's abdomen, but it was amazing to see the doctors deliver it. To see it just ""pop out"". Still, to this day, I get that feeling of awe and amazement every time I help a mom deliver her baby. I feel so lucky to be part of such a wonderful moment in a family's life. As a maternal fetal medicine specialist, I take care of sick moms, sick babies, and sick pregnancies. Each day, while I get to help women and their families with big wins and happy moments, I also have the opportunity to help them through sad times and some of the worst moments of their lives. It is these hard and sad moments that make the happy ones even more meaningful. I also spend some of my time helping to teach medical students about Ob/Gyn. I really enjoy teaching, and sharing my love for Ob/Gyn with young learners is one of my favorite parts of my job. My other very important job is being a mom. I have three fantastic young boys that keep me busy and remind me on a daily basis how important family is. I love to swim and make jam. Apricot Jam is my favorite.". I find the women who seek treatment in our urogynecology specialty to be an inspirational set of people. Our ladies, who span a wide age range, are generally active and want to stay this way -- without a pelvic floor disorder weighing them down. The services and treatment options that we provide are innovative and I strive to tailor my recommendations to fit the woman in front of me -- her lifestyle, her activity level and her concerns. I am originally from Miami and moved north for the sole purpose of joining this wonderful urogynecology practice. The physicians, nursing staff, and administrative staff that I have the fortune of working with are a dynamic group who shares the common goal of providing professional and patient-focused care. I specialize in treating mothers who have infectious diseases that might affect their baby during pregnancy or develop infections while pregnant. As a researcher, I conduct clinical trials with the goal of improving pregnancy outcomes. I am trained in obstetrics and gynecology and have done additional training in maternal-fetal medicine. I chose to pursue maternal-fetal medicine because it allows me to focus on treating a complex medical problem for a short period of time, when the patient is still relatively healthy. Most of the medical problems I treat have a positive outcome. Pregnancy is a joyous time for the patient and their family, and I enjoy sharing in that happiness. Outside of work, I enjoy spending time with my husband and our twins. I also enjoy traveling, cooking, running on trails, and watching and playing golf. I am a maternal-fetal medicine doctor and provide obstetrical care to high-risk moms, either because the mother could have a maternal medical complication or the fetus could be affected by a complication or an anomaly. My primary role is to help patients make an informed decision on determining when to deliver and how, meaning at what gestational age we should do a C-section or have a vaginal birth. These questions can be incredibly complex and there’s not a perfect right or wrong answer, so I help the patient and their families think through options so they can make an informed decision for their unique situation. Here at Duke, we foster a collaborative environment, which is especially important in this subspecialty, since the fetus will oftentimes have a condition that requires a pediatric team. So we all work well together to tailor a plan that is specific to the patient and their needs. Dr. Wheeler is highly rated in 1 condition, according to our data. Her top areas of expertise are Preeclampsia, Postpartum Depression, Endometritis, and Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) Infection.

I never thought I wanted to be a doctor until I worked at Planned Parenthood after college. As a medical assistant working with patients, I realized my passion for women’s health. I later went to UNC for medical school and decided to pursue obstetrics and gynecology due to the importance of women’s health care. During residency at UC San Diego, I was fortunate to rotate at the local VA hospital and loved serving our veterans and their families. I knew that I wanted to work at a VA when I completed training. After my fellowship in family planning at Emory University, I couldn’t be happier with my current job! I split my time between Duke, mainly focusing on contraception and pregnancy loss care, and the Durham VA, where I can provide gynecology care to our much deserving, women veterans. Dr. Thomason is highly rated in 1 condition, according to our data. Her top areas of expertise are Vaginal Bleeding Between Periods, Menopause, and Intrauterine Device Insertion.

I am a doctor and researcher who focuses on women’s health issues. My research focuses on infection during pregnancy, specifically HIV infection. I’ve been at Duke for over 25 years. Women who have HIV could have a baby who does not have HIV, if given the right care. My goal is to achieve this result for all mothers with HIV. I consider myself to be a nurturing person who enjoys taking care of people. I view it as an honor to help women at such a sensitive and special time in their lives. I want my patients to feel like they are part of the care team, and that they are safe and in good hands. My favorite time of year is the holidays, when I get a stack of cards from many of the mothers who I’ve treated containing pictures of their babies. Outside of work, I enjoy walking my dog, hiking, working in my yard and exercising. Her top areas of expertise are Premature Infant, Gestational Diabetes, and Preeclampsia.

I take care of women from adolescence through their adult lives. I went into OB-GYN because I had an interest in women’s health, and I felt like the specialty gave me the opportunity to have a longitudinal relationship with women. You get to serve in many different roles, from routine maintenance to specific problems to major milestones. As a general OB-GYN, I take care of things from contraception counseling to abnormal bleeding, abnormal Pap smears, prenatal care, pregnancy loss, etc. I take care of women during major points of their lives, whether it’s pregnancy, menopause, miscarriage, etc. I really like to get to know the patient as a person and hope to build a relationship for many years. Trust is very important. What I love most about OB-GYN are the deliveries. The fact that I’m able to participate in those special moments with families means a lot to me and brings me a lot of joy. Her top areas of expertise are Vaginal Bleeding Between Periods, Bartholin Cyst or Abscess, and Menopause.

I was a graduate student working on a combined MD and PhD in neuroscience research when my twin boys arrived prematurely and needed the services of the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). This experience in the NICU environment inspired me to continue my work in neuroscience and specialize in neonatology. As a neonatologist, I care for newborn infants who require intensive care for different reasons, including being born prematurely, with heart defects or brain injuries. Providing treatment for critically ill infants, and helping to bring them to a place of stability and health, is truly gratifying. In addition to the clinical care I provide, I am involved in research regarding how to both mitigate and treat brain injuries which occur in infants due to premature birth. His top areas of expertise are Cerebral Hypoxia and Necrotizing Enterocolitis.

I decided at a very young age that I wanted to become an obstetrician. I was 7 when I watched my own mother go through pregnancy and became fascinated with pregnancy and birth. I started telling everyone “I’m going to deliver babies when I grow up.” As I went through medical school, my draw to the specialty confirmed what I'd felt from a very young age. One of the many reasons I love working at Duke is we are always well-equipped to deal with any emergencies which can arise unexpectedly. While most deliveries do not require any interventions, I am happy we can offer anything needed on a moment’s notice. In addition to taking care of pregnant patients, I enjoy taking care of adolescent women who are transitioning into adulthood. I also enjoy caring for perimenopausal patients and menopausal patients. I am happy to offer in office procedures, such as essure tubal ligation, which is a great option for women whom have completed childbearing. In addition, I enjoy surgical procedures in the operating room when surgery is required to treat an issue that cannot be managed with medication. Her top areas of expertise are Cervical Dysplasia, Ovarian Cysts, Neonatal Ovarian Cyst, Pelvic Inflammatory Disease, and Intrauterine Device Insertion.

I enjoy getting to know patients when they first come in, maybe for contraception, then when they’re thinking about starting a family, and then seeing them through their pregnancy and hopefully being able to deliver their baby. For any patient coming in for an obstetrics or gynecology visit, the first time they have that exam can be very intimidating. My goal is to make people as comfortable as possible, especially for those seeing me for the first time -- making them feel comfortable about asking questions. There’s no such thing as a dumb question. The dumb question is the one you don’t ask. At our practice, we all communicate with each other about being consistent in the way that we provide care. We’re all on the same page of our goal of doing the right thing and best thing for the patient. Her top areas of expertise are Lichen Sclerosus, Vitiligo, Female Genital Sores, and Hydrocele.

Growing up, I always had an interest in science. Early on, I actually considered becoming a veterinarian because I love animals. However, after having more experience in the veterinary field as well as in medicine, I was drawn to taking care of people. Women’s health provides a unique opportunity in medicine to interact with patients throughout different stages of their life. Obstetrics reflects a particularly exciting time in most women’s lives, and it is an honor to be able to participate in that experience. Duke has several benefits. One is immediate access to top tier clinicians in a variety of subspecialties. Another is that everyone holds themselves to a high personal standard; I’m proud to be a part of that type of work culture. I spend most of my time outside of work with my family, which includes my husband, twin daughters, a cat, and two dogs. I also love to eat, and I enjoy exploring the excellent restaurants throughout the Triangle. Her top areas of expertise are Neonatal Ovarian Cyst, Endometrial Cancer, Ovarian Cysts, and Female Genital Sores.

As a child, I had a heart condition and spent a lot of time in and out of doctors offices and hospitals. So I was inspired at an early age toward a career in medicine. I love taking care of women in all stages of their lives. We have young, healthy women having babies, and we have middle-aged women going through other transitions such as menopause. The surgical aspect of our specialty is very important to me as I also enjoy and take pride in my surgical skills. What makes our practice unique is not just our very well-trained physicians, but also that we have other very well-trained physicians of all specialties at our fingertips. So when our patients do have complications or issues that require other specialists, we have the ability to get them in quickly. We also have a premier intensive care nursery, so in the unlikely event than infants need help, we can provide that easily as well. I have two children and enjoy following them around to all their sports activities. Her top areas of expertise are Pelvic Inflammatory Disease and Menopause.

I am an obstetrician and gynecologist for Durham OB/GYN. I follow patients during their teenage years, through pregnancies and menopause. One of the special things about being a practicing OB/GYN is being a part of the lifelong care of a woman. When I meet a new patient I like to get a good history and set a treatment plan that is specific to that individual's needs and problems. Plus, being a part of the Duke team allows me to work closely with a woman’s primary care provider along with any specialist. My favorite part of my job is all of the different things I get to do, from seeing patients in the office to delivering babies to being a part of OR procedures. The variety keeps me very motivated. In my spare time, I enjoy exploring the outdoors with my husband and two little girls. Her top areas of expertise are Menorrhagia, Vaginal Cysts, Vaginal Dryness, and Menopause.

My lifelong interest in both women’s health and preventative health inspired my decision to pursue a career in medicine. As an obstetrician and gynecologist, I provide care for women of all ages, from teens who are just entering their reproductive years to older women who are beyond menopause. I treat women for a variety of issues and conditions, including infections, heavy menstrual bleeding, fibroid tumors, endometriosis, and symptoms associated with menopause. As a Certified Menopause Practitioner, the Menopause Society has validated my expertise in helping women with menopausal symptoms to find relief. I spend time listening to my patients in an effort to really understand what brings them in and how I can best help them. The connection I make with each patient helps me tailor care to that individual patient and her circumstances. With each patient interaction, I learn more about my field, and how to better care for all the women in my practice. Her top areas of expertise are Vulvovaginitis, Pelvic Inflammatory Disease, Menopause, and Vitiligo.

I became an OB-GYN because this specialty allows me to form close bonds with my patients. As obstetricians and gynecologists, we are trusted with intimate secrets, and we are responsible for taking care of our patients and protecting them when they are most vulnerable. I perform minimally invasive procedures, such as laparoscopy, hysteroscopy, endometrial ablations, LEEP, laser, and colposcopy to treat a variety of conditions, such as fibroids, endometriosis, abnormal uterine bleeding, vulvar lesions, abnormal pap smears, ovarian cysts, and infertility. I have the privilege of helping someone start a family and participating in one of life's most wonderful moments: the celebration of a newborn. The most gratifying part of my job is knowing that I have helped someone start a family, that I was able to care for a woman in a time of difficulty, and that I have helped the rest of her family by helping her. His top areas of expertise are Menorrhagia, Ovarian Cysts, and Menopause.

I am an obstetrician and gynecologist. I mostly see patients along with OB-GYN residents, in my role as an educator. We see patients in the benign gynecology clinic in Duke Clinic and we also see patients offsite, mostly in area health departments. A lot of times we take care of women who don’t have a lot of resources or who have already exhausted resources and they are coming to Duke because we are their only option. As an OB-GYN doctor, you’re catching a woman sometimes at the happiest times of her life and sometimes at the saddest times of her life. I think it’s very important to have an environment where she doesn’t feel judged, and where she feels comfortable sharing any information that you can use to help her feel better and to empower her to seek the care that she needs and do what she can do to contribute to the betterment of her health. Her top areas of expertise are Vaginal Bleeding Between Periods, Cervical Dysplasia, Human Papillomavirus Infection, and Female Genital Sores.

I see a wide variety of patients, from pregnancy care to the delivery process, annual visits, or patients who need gynecology surgery. I try to be very instructional and give patients as much information as I can about the problem that they are here for and the options for treatments. I like to keep the dialogue open and hopefully, patients feel very comfortable by the time they are leaving the office after their visit. One of the nice features about Duke is the integration between specialties. Most women come to our office for OB-GYN care, but to treat them as a whole person, with other health care needs, I am able to communicate with other physicians in other specialties and use ancillary resources through the Duke system. Her top areas of expertise are Lichen Sclerosus, Angiomyoma, Uterine Fibroids, and Female Genital Sores.

I am honored to be a part of women’s lives when they’re going through exciting changes and sometimes sad changes as well, such as miscarriage and pregnancy loss. It can be an exciting, emotional time. I really enjoy getting to know my patients throughout their whole life, whether it’s her first OB/GYN visit to having her first baby to menopause. My clinical interests are general obstetrics, recurrent pregnancy loss, contraception and family planning. I work with our residency program in our family planning clinic where I am the director, and I am also associate residency director. I grew up on a small farm in western North Carolina and went to undergraduate at UNC-Chapel Hill. After undergraduate school, I joined the Peace Corps and went to Ecuador, then came back to the area for medical school. My husband and I have a two year old son who takes up the bulk or our time and consumes a lot of our energy. I have learned a lot from having a son that I put to use in my in practice in obstetrics and how I take care of women in pregnancy. Her top areas of expertise are Menopause, Intrauterine Device Insertion, and Salpingo-Oophorectomy.

      What is an OB-GYN?

An obstetrician-gynecologist (OB-GYN) is a doctor specializing in the reproductive health, pregnancy, and childbirth of individuals assigned female at birth. Obstetricians focus on care during pregnancy, childbirth, and postpartum, while gynecologists manage conditions affecting the female reproductive system, like menstrual disorders or infections. Most OB-GYNs are trained in both fields, which allows them to handle a wide range of health needs. Gynecologists who are not also obstetricians do not deliver babies, while OB-GYNs typically provide this service.

What are the different types of OB-GYNs?

OB-GYNs can specialize in various areas, depending on their training and focus:

      • General OB-GYNs: Provide comprehensive reproductive health care, including routine exams, contraception, and pregnancy care.
      • Gynecologic Oncologists: Specialize in diagnosing and treating cancers of the female reproductive system.

How often should I visit an OB-GYN?

The frequency of visits depends on your health and circumstances

      • Individuals who are not pregnant: Should visit an OB-GYN once a year for preventive care, including pelvic exams and screenings.
      • Pregnant individuals: Typically have monthly visits during the first 28 weeks of pregnancy, biweekly visits from weeks 28 to 36, and weekly visits from week 36 until delivery.

Your doctor might recommend more frequent visits if you have a high-risk condition.

What age should an individual start seeing an OB-GYN?

People assigned female at birth should schedule their first visit to an OB-GYN between the ages of 13 and 15. This initial visit is often a conversation about health, development, and any questions or concerns. Pap smear screenings for cervical cancer generally begin at age 21, although earlier screenings may be recommended based on individual health needs, such as having a family history of cervical cancer.

      Can OB-GYNs perform surgeries?

Yes, OB-GYNs are trained surgeons capable of performing a wide range of procedures. Common surgeries include cesarean sections (C-sections), hysterectomies, laparoscopic surgeries for conditions like endometriosis, and removal of ovarian cysts. They also perform minimally invasive procedures like dilation and curettage (D&C) or tubal ligation for sterilization. Some OB-GYNs focus heavily on surgical care, depending on their specialization or patient needs.

When should I see an OBGYN near Durham, NC?

There are various reasons why you may want to see a specialist, such as:

      • Your primary care provider recommends it.
      • Your condition requires expert knowledge and specialized care.
      • Your symptoms persist or worsen despite treatment.
      • You need specialized testing or procedures.
      • You want a second opinion.

What should I consider when choosing a OBGYN near Durham, NC?

It’s important to see a provider with expertise in your specific condition. Each provider profile in MediFind’s doctor database includes information on which conditions they treat, years of experience, research contributions, languages spoken, insurance plans accepted, and more.

How does MediFind rank OBGYNs near Durham, NC?

MediFind’s rankings are based on a variety of data sources, such as the number of articles a doctor has published in medical journals, participation in clinical trials and industry conferences, as well as the number of patients that provider sees for a given condition. Note that MediFind’s provider database is not based on user reviews, and providers do not pay to be included in the database.

What types of insurance are accepted by OBGYNs near Durham, NC?

Most profiles in MediFind’s doctor database include a list of insurance plans accepted by that provider. However, it’s a good idea to contact the provider’s office to make sure they still accept your insurance, then doublecheck by contacting your insurance plan to confirm they’re in network.

How can I book an appointment online with a OBGYN in Durham?

MediFind offers direct scheduling for certain providers using the “Request Appointment” button on that provider’s profile. If the schedule option is not available for a provider, tap the red “Show Phone Number” button on their profile to get their contact information. If you prefer to find providers who offer online scheduling, select “Schedules online” under the “Availability” category of the filter feature on the left side of the OBGYN search results page.

Why is it important to get a second opinion from a different OBGYN?

Second opinions are an opportunity to confirm a diagnosis and its root cause, learn about alternative treatment options, or simply gain peace of mind. Many people, especially those with serious diagnoses, get second opinions so they can understand all their options and make informed decisions, so don’t hesitate to get one if you have any doubts or need more information or clarification regarding your care. Note that some insurance plans require second opinions, while others don’t cover second opinions, so be sure to confirm with your insurance provider first.

How can I prepare for my appointment with a OBGYN near Durham, NC?

Prepare for your appointment by gathering the following items:

      • Copies of medical records (dating back at least one year)
      • Your medical history, including illnesses, medical conditions, surgeries, and other doctors you see
      • Family history of disease
      • List of current prescription drugs, over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal remedies or supplements including names and doses
      • Allergies to medications, food, latex, insects, etc.
      • List of questions and concerns
      • Your insurance card

You might also contact the provider’s office to see if they offer transportation or childcare services or if you’re allowed to bring a loved one for support or to take notes during your visit.

What questions should I ask my OBGYN?

      Here are some sample questions:

      • Can you explain in simple terms what this condition is and how it’s treated?
      • What symptoms or side effects should I watch for?
      • What tests will be involved, and when can I expect results?
      • Are there other specialists I need to see?
      • What’s the best way to reach you if I have follow-up questions?

How can I learn about the latest clinical trials and research advances my OBGYN may know about?

MediFind’s Clinical Trials tool asks you a series of questions to help you narrow down your search by health condition, age, gender, location, how far you’re willing to travel, and more. Each question you answer filters down the number of trials until you find the ones that are most relevant to you.

MediFind’s Latest Advances tool features summaries of recent articles published in medical journals. We use cutting-edge technology to scour medical publication databases for the latest research advancements on any given condition, then we simplify this information in a way that’s useful and easy to understand.

Can I filter my search to show male or female OBGYNs near Durham, NC?

Look for the filter feature on the left side of the OBGYN search results page. Select “Female” or “Male” under the “Gender” category to search for female or male providers exclusively. If the “Any” option is selected, it will pull results for both male and female providers.

Can I filter my search to find a OBGYN that offers video calls?

Look for the filter feature on the left-side of the OBGYN search results page. Select “Offers telehealth visits” under the Availability category to search for providers who offer virtual appointments (video calls).
