I am a native of North Carolina and particularly Vance County. I take pride in returning to my hometown to provide for the medical needs of my patients. I joined Duke Primary Care Henderson in November 2011, and I have truly enjoyed my experience and the patients that I have cared for along the way. I decided to stay with Duke and transferred to Duke Primary Care Waverly Place in Cary in July 2014. This move provided more opportunities for my husband and we were able to be closer to family. I provide a full spectrum of patient care, extending from newborns to geriatrics. I have a strong interest in management of chronic disease, such as diabetes, hypertension, hyperlipidemia, and heart disease. I also enjoy women's health and provide services for IUD placement/removal, and Nexplanon placement/removal. I enjoy office procedures, including joint injections, incision and drainage of abscesses, toenail removal, laceration repair, and cyrosurgery for skin lesions. I enjoy dealing with urgent care and walk-in issues. I have a strong desire for continuing medical education, and enjoy teaching medical and nursing students at our clinic. So stop by and let our Duke family become a part of your family. Dr. Pathan is highly rated in 4 conditions, according to our data. My strong sense of family is why I love working in the field of family medicine. I truly enjoy treating the entire family, from your children to your grandparents. This is what also prompted me to move to North Carolina, to be closer to my family. I enjoy spending time with my two sons and husband outdoors, whether it’s going for a hike or a bike ride. I believe being physically active is very important to living a long and healthy life and is something I look forward to discussing at our yearly preventative wellness visits. During our time together at your office visit, I feel it is important that we end each visit with an opportunity for you to ask any lingering questions. Developing a long lasting patient-doctor relationship is something I truly value, and I look forward to seeing you in the office. Dr. Hartung is highly rated in 3 conditions, according to our data. I became a family physician because I believe the doctor-patient relationship is central to medicine. As primary care providers, we are often the person the patient knows and trusts most. We are typically the first physician you seek for health concerns, acute illness and health maintenance. In me, you will find a compassionate physician who listens and cares. You will find a communicator who can explain things in language you will understand. My clinical interests include preventative health, immunizations, routine gynecological care, asthma, migraine, and hypertension (high blood pressure) management. Outside of work, I enjoy spending time with my husband, two daughters, extended family, travel, theater, music and walking. I speak medical Spanish and love to meet people from different cultures and nationalities, as I myself come from an international background. I look forward to meeting with you soon!. Her top areas of expertise are Hypertension, Familial Hypertension, Glucocorticoid-Remediable Aldosteronism, and Sitosterolemia.

I have been an internist for almost 20 years, the last three with Duke Primary Care. My areas of interest are preventive medicine, women’s health and diabetes management. While every physician has a different source of love for their job, I believe that the single most significant motivator for me is the ability to see the positive impact I can have on people’s lives. Throughout my practice as an internist, besides providing compassionate care, I have loved being able to foster patient empowerment through education and guidance. I’m a proud mother of two children, one in high school and the other in college. My husband, a cardiologist, motivates me to exercise regularly -- as I often advise my patients. Hiking, traveling, cooking and listening to music are my favorite pastime activities when I am not working. Dr. Thakkar is highly rated in 8 conditions, according to our data. "I have been a practicing physician for more than 15 years, with experience in both hospital medicine and primary care. My idol and mentor is my uncle, who practiced in rural Hungary for over three decades. He was loved and respected by his community as he built personal relationships and friendships with every family he treated over many years. Spending a lot of summers with him while I grew up made me realize that medicine was the profession I needed to choose. My philosophy of ""listen to what your patient is telling you"" has been proven very effective in getting to the diagnosis fast and efficiently. I enjoy helping people and getting to know the whole person, as people are different and treatment needs to be individualized. I am happily married with five kids (four grown up) and enjoy outdoor activities including hiking, farming and traveling.". Dr. Kiss is highly rated in 4 conditions, according to our data. What is a primary care physician (PCP)?

A primary care physician (PCP) is the first doctor people go to when they feel sick or need a check-up. This doctor helps with many different health problems, gives advice to keep patients healthy, and treats common illnesses. A PCP also keeps track of a person’s overall health and can refer them to a specialist if more specific care is needed.

What’s the difference between a primary care physician (PCP) and a specialist?

The main difference between a PCP and a specialist is the kind of health conditions they treat. PCPs care for people of all ages and treat a wide range of health issues, from the common cold to sports injuries. They also focus on preventive care, such as vaccines to prevent illnesses or screenings to catch diseases before they become serious.

Specialists, on the other hand, have advanced training in a specific area of medicine like cardiology (heart health) or neurology (brain health). There are many kinds of specialists on MediFind, each with their own focus. When needed, PCPs will help patients understand when they need to see a specialist. PCPs will also collaborate with specialists on a treatment plan specific to their patients’ needs.

What is another name for a primary care physician?

There are a few different types of primary care doctors. In addition to primary care providers, a primary care physician may also be called a general practitioner, family doctor, or internist. There are also PCPs with special training to work with specific patient populations. Pediatricians, for example, are PCPs who work with children, while geriatricians are PCPs who work with older adults.

Why do people have a primary care physician?

People have a primary care physician to help keep them healthy and to have a doctor they can go to for most of their health needs. A PCP helps with regular check-ups, treats illnesses, and can help manage long-term health problems. That’s why it’s helpful for patients to maintain long-term relationships with their PCPs if possible.

Why does my health insurance require me to see a primary care physician?

Health insurance requires patients to see a primary care physician because a PCP helps keep people healthy with preventive care, which lowers costs for the insurer. A PCP can also decide if a patient needs to see a specialist, which helps avoid unnecessary tests and treatments, keeping healthcare costs down.

What is the first thing a doctor does when seeing a patient?

The first thing a primary care doctor does when seeing a patient is to ask questions about their health and health goals. This includes asking about symptoms, past health problems, family health history, and lifestyle. This helps the doctor understand what’s going on if the patient is experiencing a problem, or what might help the patient get healthier or stay healthy.

When should I visit a Nurse Practitioner (NP) vs. a Doctor (MD)?

You can visit a Nurse Practitioner (NP) for routine check-ups, minor illnesses, and help with long-term health issues. Nurse Practitioners are trained to handle many common health problems. You should see a Doctor (MD) for more serious or complicated health issues, or if you need specialized care that an NP cannot provide. Sometimes, NPs and MDs work together to take care of their patients.
