I am a sports medicine and shoulder surgery specialist. I try to treat all patients as individuals and family. I grew up in North Carolina where I attended public schools through college. I do complex shoulder surgeries, such as reverse shoulder arthroplasty, total shoulder replacement, and superior capsular reconstruction for irreparable rotator cuff tears. Conservative care and rehabilitation are tried first, but if surgery is needed, I employ the most advanced, minimally invasive techniques using pain blocks for anesthesia to minimize the need for opioids and get home early and safely. As a sports medicine physician, my role in the Department of Duke Orthopaedics is to take care of patients who are injured or in pain that do not need surgery. I first became interested in sports medicine as an athlete in college. I noticed that several of my teammates and I had injuries and needed help but never needed surgery. I have always been fascinated by how our bodies work and heal. Our bodies have an amazing ability to heal themselves. At Duke, we have great surgeons that could repair or replace almost anything. My goal is to help people get back to their activity and become healthy as soon as possible without using surgery. This can be done with ultrasound guided procedures such as injections of corticosteroids, platelet rich plasma or PRP and stem cells. I am a board-certified clinical specialist in sports physical therapy and an athletic trainer with a passion for the sports medicine setting. I enjoy treating a variety of sports and orthopaedic injuries, and I also enjoy enhancing people's performance to help them reach their goals of returning to high levels of sport and activities. My interest in sports physical therapy began when I was a young athlete battling injuries. With the help of great rehabilitation, I was able to pursue my dream of playing college baseball at Purdue University as well as pursue my athletic training degree. With this experience, I have a special interest and expertise in baseball sports medicine, including injury prevention and rehabilitation. I also have a special interest in treating patients after ACL injury, and enjoy working with football, basketball, and lacrosse athletes. Outside of sports medicine, I enjoy watching and playing sports, traveling, and spending time with my family and my dog, Scout.

As a former athlete myself, I appreciate the positive impact of sports and physical activity. Whether an elite athlete or a recreationally active patient, I enjoy helping patients get back to activity. I take care of musculoskeletal issues in any age and activity level, and routinely use ultrasound for diagnostic and procedural interventions. In my free time, I enjoy traveling and being outdoors with my husband and two dogs, as well as exploring new restaurants in the Durham and Triangle area.

Growing up in Pittsburgh, sports was an integral part of my life, so my decision to become an athletic trainer turned sports medicine doctor was a no-brainer. I may be a bit biased, but sports medicine is the best specialty as it allows the patient and physician to truly take a team approach to the treatment plan. My favorite encounters are those when patients return to share that they are running marathons or gardening again because their pain or function has improved as a result of our shared plan. When not working, I can be found enjoying the outdoors with my goldendoodle or traveling the country to see family and friends.

While I am passionate about physical therapy, my motivation is fueled by the connections I form with my patients. I am deeply committed to helping patients of all activity levels bridge the gap between where they are presently and where they would like to be, blending the realms of rehabilitation and performance. After a thorough, holistic evaluation, I strive to establish a solid foundation to build upon. My treatments are tailored to fit the needs of my patients, emphasizing return-to-activity principles, strength and conditioning, and injury prevention. My time in the D1 training room, experience as a former collegiate wrestler, and sports residency experience have given me unique insight for navigating rehabilitation obstacles athletes' face both on and off the field. I believe in a collaborative approach, beginning with a strong patient-therapist working alliance and consistent communication with surgeons, athletic trainers, strength coaches, and other members of the healthcare team. Outside of the clinic, I enjoy coaching wrestling, personal training, and spending time with my family, which fuels my passion for helping others stay active and healthy.
